MacGregor hopeful that Whitmer rescinds budget transfers; ready to work on supplemental

LANSING, Mich. State Senate Majority Floor Leader Peter MacGregor, R-Rockford, issued the following statement on Monday urging Gov. Whitmer to rescind her administrative budget transfers, which can be done unilaterally and without legislative action, and to work with the Legislature to restore vital budget funding she vetoed.

“The Legislature approved a budget that funded and, in many instances, increased, funding for programs for foster kids, schools, autism, police and to fix and maintain the roads. The governor, instead of signing the budget and saving everyone the heartache of the past six weeks, chose to veto almost $1 billion in funding, and she transferred an additional $600 million for mean-spirited and purely political reasons.

“I am hopeful our governor will take the news of the devastating effects of her budget cuts and transfers to heart and, over the next few weeks, reconsider her actions to restore the funding she so needlessly removed. She can do this by simply convening a meeting of the State Administrative Board and reversing her transfers.

“I stand ready to work with her administration on a potential budget supplemental, but the people of Michigan must have her assurance that she will not continue to use them as pawns in her political game.”
