LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Peter MacGregor and Rep. Chris Afendoulis on Friday presented a special tribute to the West Michigan Whitecaps in recognition of the team’s 25th anniversary.
“It is an honor to congratulate the players, coaches, staff and the fans of the West Michigan Whitecaps on 25 successful years as a minor league baseball team in the Grand Rapids area,” said MacGregor, R-Rockford. “While the heart of baseball still lies in parents teaching the game to our children or cheering them on when they get their first hit, the Whitecaps offer kids a chance to come to the ballpark, root for their team, and dream that one day they might wear the uniform and hit the game-winning home run.
“I salute the West Michigan Whitecaps for helping young kids dream for 25 years, and I look forward to another 25 years of great family fun.”
The tribute highlights that the Whitecaps have earned six Eastern Division titles, won six Midwest League championships, set several league records, seen over 130 players go on to play in the majors, and this year welcomed their 10 millionth fan.
“In addition to being a fun game to play and watch, baseball can help us teach important life lessons to young people, such as the value of perseverance and teamwork,” MacGregor said. “Learning to work as a team is often the only way to achieve great things. Just as important is learning about failure. Even the greatest baseball players fail two-thirds of the time. It is how they respond to failure that truly defines them.”
The tribute was signed by MacGregor; Afendoulis, R-Grand Rapids Township; Lt. Gov. Brian Calley; and Gov. Rick Snyder.
